The Minor Power
Gallery Woong (Booth C04) presents Flow as One, a solo presentation by Chulan Kwak at this year’s HIVE Art Fair. The works translate the energy of a single calligraphic stroke into three-dimensional sculptural form — rigid materials rendered as fluid, brushstroke-like gestures that carry rhythm and motion through space. In the artist talk accompanying the exhibition, Kwak speaks candidly about his choice of “unruly rebellion” as a sculptor. He traces the fear and self-doubt of turning away from traditional woodworking’s rules — embracing plywood, veneer, nail guns, and artificial finishes, materials long dismissed in the world of craft — and how these so-called “minor” methods paradoxically granted him an unprecedented freedom of form. Through the “different results” born from his “wrong methods,” the talk opens a shared conversation about what it truly means to find the right answer in art.
