Core
The Core is a curated exhibition section that intensively explores the sensibilities and critical perspectives facing contemporary art. The theme of HIVE's first edition is 'A Sustainable Art Ecosystem, which stems from the question of how to healthily sustain a single ecosystem where the art market, professional institutions, artists and audiences are all organically connected.
Today’s art world still operates amidst information asymmetry and structural exclusivity. Within this reality, The Core seeks to explore establish ways of connection over competition, as well as coexistence over exclusion. This hence leads to an expansion of our gaze toward nature; a larger ecosystem that constantly changes and accumulates, and one which connects and circulates in invisible ways. Within it lies an order of symbiosis and sustainability.
In each corresponding Core section, three artists (Joon Kim, Hyung Jin Park, and Hanna Chang) present their respective solo exhibitions. Joon Kim collects and reconstructs sounds from nature, cities, and geological environments, thus revealing the invisible flow of the environment through auditory experiences. Hyung Jin Park's exhibition visualizes the subtle changes of nature through layers of color and time via repetitive observation and documentation. In Hanna Chang's exhibition, the diverse transformations and circulations of man-made artifacts within nature are explored, thereby documenting the imperceptible workings of the natural world.
While the works of all three artists conceive of nature as both their subject matter and theme, they nevertheless demonstrate nature's continuity and persistence through distinct means: sound, color, and materiality. Through these methods, these artists approach nature not only as artists, but also as observers, recorders and researchers.
Through their gazes, The Core simultaneously examines the ecosystem of nature and the ecosystem of art. Imagining a structure of cooperation and sharing beyond exclusivity, The Core operates as a small yet significant catalyst for a sustainable art ecosystem.
